The Gallbladder

Your gallbladder is a small organ beneath the right side of the liver.

Function of the gallbladder

The gallbladder collects and stores a liquid called bile that helps your body break down food.

Small, hard deposits called gallstones can form in the gallbladder. This is a common condition.

Gallstones can often cause pain and other complications.

These complications can include:

  • Sharp pain in the abdomen
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever due to infected gallbladder
  • The gallstones can also get into the bile duct and cause jaundice (yellow skin)

(The bile duct connects the gallbladder with your intestines)

Treatment of gallbladder problems

Removal of the gallbladder is usually the best way to treat gallbladder problems. A majority of gallbladder removal procedures can be done via keyhole/laparoscopic surgery.

Removal of the gallbladder is not associated with any impairment of digestion in most people.

What are the advantages of laparoscopic gallbladder surgery?

  • Smaller cuts and scar
  • Less wound infections
  • Less pain than after open surgery
  • Quicker recovery than open surgery – most patients are able to go home the day after their surgery
  • Patients are able to return to regular activities quickly
